1952 – 2024
On May 16th, 2024, Debra Darlene Karen (born Karjala) passed away peacefully in her sleep in Hudson, Quebec, Canada. Debbie was 71 years old.
Debbie is survived by her husband, Michael Karen; and her children, Alexander Karen and Christopher Karen. She was preceded in death by her parents Sirkka and Jussi Karjala.
Debbie was born on December 30th, 1952 in Westmount, Montreal, Canada. She graduated from Monkland High School in 1969 and Dawson College in 1972. In 1976, she completed a Communication Arts degree specializing in film from Concordia University (Loyola College); where she also met the love of her life and future husband, Michael, who she married November 5th, 1977.
In 1979, Debbie and Michael created Final Cut Enterprises Ltd., a very successful film post-production company. As a film editor, Debbie worked on over 30 movies in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Los Angeles and in 2014, Debbie was presented with the Canadian Cinema Editor's Lifetime Achievement Award.
A loving and devoted wife and mother, Debbie spent the majority of her life going above and beyond for family. An avid reader, cinephile, world traveler, sports enthusiast and master chef, Debbie loved life. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. At the family's request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Instead, friends and loved ones are asked to take a moment to cherish a memory they have of Debbie and share that story out loud.
